How to Start a Prayer Journal — A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

You want to pray more consistently. You've tried. But your mind wanders, you forget what you wanted to say, and you're not sure if God is even listening.
Here's what changed everything for me: a prayer journal. Not fancy. Not perfect. Just a notebook where I write my messy prayers instead of letting them float away.
This guide shows you how to start a prayer journal — even if you've never journaled before. Five simple steps. Five formats you can try. Scripture prompts for each day of the week. And a video companion on my YouTube channel to walk you through it.
Step 1: Get Your Tools (Simple and Cheap)
You don't need a leather-bound journal from a fancy store. Start with:
- Any notebook — spiral, composition, even loose paper in a binder
- A pen you like — doesn't have to be expensive
- A quiet spot — your kitchen table, a corner of the couch, even your car
That's it. Don't wait until you have "perfect" tools. Start today with what you have.
Step 2: Choose a Simple Format (5 Options)
Here are five prayer journaling formats. Pick one that feels natural.
A – Adoration (praise God for who He is)
C – Confession (say what you've done wrong)
T – Thanksgiving (list 3 things you're grateful for)
S – Supplication (ask for what you need)
D – One Decision you need wisdom for today
O – One Obstacle you want God to remove
S – One Scripture you're holding onto
E – One Emotion you're feeling (be honest)
Write one verse. Then write it in your own words. Then write a one-sentence prayer based on that verse. Example: "Lord, you say you are near to the brokenhearted. I feel broken today. Please be near."
Before you ask for anything, write 5 things you're thankful for. After that, write your requests. Gratitude softens your heart and reminds you of God's past faithfulness.

For busy days. Just write short phrases. No full sentences. Example:
• "Help with the meeting at 2 PM."
• "Heal Mom's back pain."
• "Peace in my marriage."
Step 3: Try a Week of Scripture Prompts
Don't know what to write? Use these prompts — one for each day of the week.

Step 4: Create a Simple Habit (No Perfectionism)
Consistency beats intensity. Here's how to make prayer journaling stick:
- Anchor it — Attach journaling to something you already do: morning coffee, right after brushing your teeth, or before scrolling social media.
- Start with 5 minutes — Set a timer. When it goes off, you can stop. No guilt.
- Keep it visible — Leave your journal and pen on the kitchen table or your nightstand. Out of sight = out of mind.
- Miss a day? Don't quit. — Just write "I'm back" and start again. Grace, not shame.
Step 5: Review and Celebrate
Every Sunday, read back through the week's journal. Look for:
- Answered prayers — Highlight them. This builds faith.
- Recurring worries — Notice patterns. Maybe God wants you to pray differently or take action.
- Growth — See how your prayers have changed. That's evidence of the Spirit at work.
