Signs God Is Speaking to You — 7 Ways He Gets Your Attention

You've asked: "Is that You, God, or just my own thoughts?"
I've asked it hundreds of times. As an ordained minister, I've sat with women who felt like God was silent — when really, He was speaking in ways they hadn't learned to recognize.
God is not hiding. He is not playing games with you. But His voice often comes differently than we expect. Not a booming thunder (usually). Not a burning bush (rarely). Instead, He whispers. He nudges. He arranges circumstances.
Here are 7 clear signs God is speaking to you — drawn from Scripture and my own years of prophetic discernment.
Sign #1 — A Scripture "Jumps Off the Page"
๐ You read a verse, and it feels like it was written for your exact situation
This is the most common way God speaks. You're reading your Bible — not looking for anything special — and suddenly a verse hits you like a lightning bolt. You know, deep down, that this is for you. That's the Holy Spirit highlighting truth.
Action step: When this happens, write the verse down. Pray it back to God. Ask: "What do you want me to do with this?"

Sign #2 — A Deep Sense of Peace (or Its Absence)
๐️ Your spirit settles when you pray about a decision
Colossians 3:15 says "let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts." When you're considering a choice, pay attention to a deep, settled calm — or a restless unease. Peace is often God's confirmation. Panic is not from Him.
Test: Before making a decision, sit in silence for two minutes. Ask: "Does this feel like freedom or pressure?" Freedom points to God.
Sign #3 — Repeated Themes (Sermons, Songs, Conversations)
๐ You hear the same message three times in one week
You hear a sermon on forgiveness. Then a podcast mentions forgiveness. Then a friend texts you about forgiveness. That's not coincidence — it's confirmation. God often repeats themes to get through our thick skulls.
Action step: Keep a "repetition journal." Every time you notice a repeated theme, write it down. After three times, ask: "Lord, what are you saying?"

Sign #4 — Wise Counsel That Confirms What You Already Sense
๐ฅ A mature believer speaks truth you needed to hear
Proverbs 11:14 says "in abundance of counselors there is safety." God often speaks through pastors, mentors, or friends who love you enough to tell you the truth. But be careful — don't shop for advice until you hear what you want. True counsel sometimes stings.
Test: Does this counsel align with Scripture? Does it produce peace? Does it challenge you to grow, not just comfort you?
Sign #5 — Open and Closed Doors (Circumstances)
๐ช Opportunities appear or disappear in unexpected ways
God directs through circumstances. A door that suddenly opens — that you didn't force — may be His invitation. A door that slams shut may be His protection. But remember: circumstances are confirmations, not initiators. Don't use them to avoid seeking God first.
Example: You pray about a job. An interview appears the next day from nowhere. That's a sign. But also pray: "Lord, if this is not from you, close it."
Sign #6 — A Quiet Impression or Sudden Thought
๐ก A thought pops into your head that feels "not your own"
You're driving, and suddenly you think: "Call your mother." You call, and she was crying. That's the Holy Spirit. These impressions are gentle, not pushy. They align with Scripture. They produce love, not fear.
Practice: Each morning, ask: "Lord, is there anyone you want me to reach out to today?" Then pay attention to the first name that comes.
Sign #7 — Dreams and Visions (With Discernment)
๐ A dream that lingers and aligns with Scripture
Acts 2:17 says "your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams." God still speaks through dreams. But not every dream is from God — some are from your own mind or the enemy. Test dreams: Do they line up with the Bible? Do they produce peace? Do they point to Jesus?
Action step: Keep a notebook by your bed. Write down dreams immediately. Then pray: "Lord, show me if this is from you." Don't obsess — just pay attention to patterns.
What If You Still Feel Unsure?
That's okay. God is not frustrated with your uncertainty. He is patient. Here's what I've learned: you don't need 100% certainty before you move. Sometimes you step in faith, and the confirmation comes after.
If you've prayed, sought counsel, checked Scripture, and still feel unsure — choose the option that produces peace, aligns with God's character, and helps others. Then move. God will redirect if you're wrong.
